Sideline Reporting

Another great way to incorporate more students into your broadcast and add a great level of professionalism to your crew is a sideline reporter.

These reporters typically handle coach or player interviews at halftime or post game, injury reports (in college or the pros. Injury reporting or speculating in a high school broadcast is a VERY dangerous slope), and other quick-hitting “special interest” stories throughout a game.

Here’s some “quick tips” for your reporter:

Be succinct. Don’t ask long and drawn out questions. You should ask short, direct questions that can be answered quickly.

Understand the situation. If it’s half time of a heated matchup, and your coach is fired up, one question might be enough to see that emotion.

Stay relevant. Halftime or shortly after the game isn’t the time to ask in-depth questions about the program. Stick to questions about the game just completed, and what it means for the next game.
